Christmas Decorations Used During the Victorian Era

You may or may not be aware of it, but many of the Christmas traditions we currently follow were originally influenced by the Victorian traditions. Same goes for the Christmas decorations: many of them are influenced by the decorations the Victorians used during Christmas. Some things have changed or evolved in certain ways over the years, while others continue to persist till this day. One way the influence of the Victorian tradition still persists with us is the way we decorate our homes during Christmas.

England was the place where these traditions originated, so there is no doubt that most of our Christmas decorations are influenced by those of the English people. Example of one such evergreen Christmas decoration is the Christmas tree. Truth to be told, the Christmas trees originated in Germany, but they didn’t attain their current popularity as indispensable Christmas decorations well until Prince Albert and Queen Victoria started using to decorate the Windsor Castle. That is how it became one of the prevailing Christmas symbols.

Funny thing is that even though the tradition originated in Britain, it gained more prominence in United States of America.

The Victorians were famous for the grandeur and opulence of their Christmas decorations. These decorations were very ornate and fearful at the same time. The Victorians used a variety of Christmas ornaments and collectibles of different shapes and hues. No doubt that our Christmas decorations are influenced from the Victorian style in more than one ways.

The Christmas trees in Victorian era were no less spectacularly and colorfully designed as the modern ones. Just like us, the Victorians decorated their trees with various decorations such as candies, Christmas dolls, bells, toys, etc. The trees used to be dazzled with various types of lights: oil lamps, candle lights, gas lamps, bubble lights, etc.

Back then there were no electric lights, but even if you decorate your tree with candles, you will see that it would look no less beautiful. The modern electric lights are however safer than candles; if you want to light your trees with candles, make sure you place the tree in a garden located a little far away from your house, rather than inside your house.

Candles in Victorian era were not only used to decorate the trees, but also the houses.

During the Christmas Eve meal, the dining tables used to be decorated with ornate mantles.
